Course Description
The course begins with a historical overview of aseptic surgical techniques and the early development of infection control. Howard defines key terminology used in infection control, especially terms from state and federal regulations. He covers infection control techniques for sterilizing instruments, disinfecting surfaces and work areas, and maintaining a clean environment, discusses the “chain of infection” – how infections spread, and how to interrupt that chain. Howard briefly discusses disease-specific sections explore tuberculosis, AIDS, and hepatitis in the context of dental infection risk. The course ends with a summary checklist for dental personnel to use as a practical guide.
Upon completing the course, students should be able to:
List and define important terms in infection control, particularly those used in state and federal regulations. List standard precaution measures required by state and federal guidelines. Describe the chain of infection, how infections are transmitted, and how to interrupt that cycle. Describe correct aseptic hand-washing procedures — the “right way” to wash hands in a clinical context. List disinfecting and sterilization techniques appropriate for different categories of instruments, devices, and surfaces (non-critical, semi-critical, critical). List and describe the personal protective equipment (PPE) used by Dental Health Care Personnel (DHCP).
